How similar are the signals dolphins use to those of other social animals, including humans, chimps, ravens, and more? Using specially designed and built gear to eavesdrop on dolphins underwater, Dr. Dudzinski has spent nearly three decades observing and learning about dolphins: how they share information, what type of information they share, and when they share it. These details provide illumination on why dolphins communicate. In this course, Dr. Dudzinski will introduce you to the how, what, when–and some of the why’s–of dolphin communication.

 

Discussion Questions

1)    How is dolphin communication similar to other social animals (e.g., terrestrial mammals, social avian species, social insects, etc.)? How is it different?

2)    What is the difference between inter and intra-species communication? What are the benefits to eavesdropping and observation, versus active participation in information exchange?

KATHLEEN DUDZINSKI – DIR., DOLPHIN COMMUNICATION PROJECT

Dr. Kathleen Dudzinski is Founder and Director of the Dolphin Communication Project, whose mission is to promote the scientific study of dolphins and inspire their conservation. Professor Dudzinski has been studying how dolphins communicate since 1990: using her award-winning, custom-built gear to “eavesdrop” on dolphins and simultaneously record the behavior and vocalizations of dolphins underwater. Dr. Dudzinski has taught at the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of Rhode Island, and her work was featured in the 2000 IMAX film DOLPHINS. She is co-author of Dolphin Mysteries: Unlocking the Secrets of Communication.
