Free To Choose 1980, Vol. 4: From Cradle to Grave

Free To Choose Network is a nonprofit media group with a global reach and a passion for big ideas. The network originally launched with Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman’s groundbreaking 1980 television series “Free to Choose,” and still believes that people—and societies—flourish when free to shape their own lives, pursue personal goals, and make choices that reflect their values. Through smart, accessible storytelling, their programs spark conversations about freedom, responsibility, and what it means to live well.

Overview

Free To Choose® is the ground-breaking PBS television series featuring Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize-winning economist. Filmed on location around the world, these programs have helped millions of people understand the close relationship between the ideas of human freedom and economic freedom.

From Cradle to Grave
The welfare state arises from the attempt to do good with other people’s money. Such attempts always fail because nobody spends somebody else’s money as carefully as their own. Welfare is supply driven. Those spending the money use force to collect it and to ensure those receiving it use it for the “right” purposes. Good intentions are corrupted by bad means. In this episode, Friedman visits the United States and Britain. Moderated by Robert McKenzie, featured participants include: Milton Friedman, James R. Dumpson (Chief Administrator, Human Resources Administration NYC), Thomas Sowell (Professor of Economics, UCLA), Robert Lampman (Professor of Economics, Institute of Poverty), and Helen Bohen O’Bannon (Secretary of Welfare, State of Pennsylvania).
